Excerpt from book -
State government has never before been so important as right now--today, tomorrow, and the next day. President Eisenhower has proposed that many of the vast responsibilities undertaken by the Federal government be turned back to the states. This dispersal of authority involves not only so-called New Deal measures but even some Federal functions which started half a century ago, when Theodore Roosevelt sat in the White House.
Already, the present administration has vested in a few states title to the rich oil reserves off the coasts of Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and California. The President has spoken of giving 'our public lands and forests' to a partnership of states. Social security, government housing, timber reserves, hydroelectric power projects, reclamation systems, employment and labor services-- these are only a few of the activities President Eisenhower hopes to see shifted in some measure from. Federal to state control.
