THE MAZAMAS were organized on the sumit of Mount Hood (Oregon) in 1894. The purposes of the club are to explore mountains, to disseminate authoritative and scientific information concerning them and to encourage the preservation of forests and other features of mountain scenery in their natural beauty.
The word "MAZAMA" is derived from the name of the mountain goat which makes its home high up among the pinnacles and glaciers of the cordilleran rnage of Western America.
The Mazamas promotes climbing, responsible recreation, and conservation values through outdoor education, advocacy, and outreach.
