description -

A very important and timely book, the text of which had been finished just before Hitler's unexpected move. How unprepared Austria was for it, is evidenced in the note of hope on which Schuschnigg ends. Perhaps before the book is published, the editors will be able to add something definite as to his fate. Meantime, this stands as documentary evidence of his creed -- of the ideals and aims which motivated a life dedicated to his country. The years covered are those of the war and afterwards -- up to the recent months. It is only indirectly an autobiography; the whole emphasis is on the political and economic and social unrest of these fateful years. Not easy reading, it assumes a fairly comprehensive understanding of Austria's internal situations and place in Europe; without that background, it would need very close and critical attention to unravel the intricacies of plots and counterplots, of conflicting social and national and economic forces which have ravaged Austria since 1918. In any case, it is an essential book for anyone interested in central European conditions today.
