Preliminary Data

The designer of an engine has for his prliminary data: (1) The class of service for which the engine is intended, whether it is for a special case, as marine, mill, electrical, locomotive, hoisting, etc., or whether it is to be put on the market and sold wherever possible, to cover a large variety of classes; (2) the rated indicated horsepower; (3) the necessary economy; (4) the allowable fluctuation of speed; (5) occasionally, the boiler pressure; and (6) the type of engine desired - that is, whether simple or compound, horizontal or vertical, high- or low-speed, Corliss or slide-valve gear, etc...
