Long, long ago in the beginning, before the time of the animal kingdom in Siminikum, there was no light in the sky. Darkness covered the whole earth and the creatures that lived upon it had a very hard time doing anything because they could not see.
 
Now at this time there was a great chief who lived up in heaven, the land of A-kum-kinny-koo. This chief had three children, two sons and a daughter.
 
One day the younger son and his sister were talking about the darkness, for they didn't like it any more than the animal people on earth.
