Yaka opened his eyes and looked about.  In the early morning darkness he could just make out the shapes of the sleeping forms about him.

 

The big long shape under the bright wool blanket was his Father.  The long thin shape under the buffalo robe was his Mother.  The little humps under more buffalo robes were his sisters.  The middle-sized shape with no cover at all was Proud Eagle, his brother.

 

Yaka listened to the far-away howl of the coyote.  Near by a dog barked out a warning.  Then all was quiet again until Proud Eagle began to snore...
